Terms of Service — RICE

Legal · Effective 30 September 2026

Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and LocalID Pty Ltd, a company registered in South Africa ("we", "us"), which operates RICE at rice.org.za. By using RICE you accept them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

1. The service

RICE provides online geospatial tools — file conversion, reprojection, coordinate conversion, geometry simplification and clipping, elevation and point-cloud processing, geocoding and map printing. Most tools process your files inside your own web browser; the exceptions are described in our Privacy Policy.

2. Plans

RICE has two plans:

  • Free — every tool, with limits: files up to 100 MB, two files per batch, one printed map and a small monthly geocoding allowance. The Free plan is supported by advertising and needs no account.
  • Premium — US$5.00 per month, billed monthly. It removes advertising and raises the limits as described on the pricing page. There is no annual plan, no minimum term and no contract beyond the current month.

3. Payment and our reseller

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns. Your purchase is also subject to Paddle's Buyer Terms.

Prices are shown in US dollars; Paddle may show the equivalent in your local currency and adds any VAT or sales tax that applies where you live. Your subscription renews automatically each month on the date you first subscribed, and you authorise Paddle to charge your payment method on each renewal until you cancel. If a renewal payment fails, Paddle will retry it; if it cannot be collected, your account returns to Free.

4. Cancelling

You can cancel at any time from the Billing page ("Manage subscription") or from the link in any Paddle receipt. Premium stays active until the end of the month you have already paid for, then your account returns to Free. You will not be charged again. Refunds are covered by our Refund Policy.

5. Changes to price or plan

If we change the Premium price, we will email subscribers at least 30 days before the change affects them. You can cancel before it takes effect. We may improve, change or retire individual tools; if we remove a feature that is central to Premium, you may cancel and ask for a pro-rata refund of the current month.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • process data you have no right to use, or use RICE for anything unlawful;
  • automate the geocoding or basemap features beyond the rate limits the tools enforce — those limits are conditions of the OpenStreetMap services we rely on;
  • attempt to bypass plan limits, interfere with the service, or resell access to it;
  • click, or cause others to click, the advertising on the site other than out of genuine interest.

We may suspend or end access for anyone who breaches these rules. If we end a paid subscription for a reason other than your breach, we will refund the unused part of the month.

7. Your data and files

You keep all rights to the files you process and the outputs RICE produces. Because most processing happens in your browser, we never receive those files. You are responsible for keeping your own copies.

8. Accuracy

RICE checks every conversion and shows you the result, but coordinate transformation relies on published parameters whose accuracy varies by region and epoch, and geocoding results are matches, not guarantees. The service is provided "as is". You are responsible for confirming that any output meets the survey, legal or engineering standard your work requires before relying on it.

9. Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits or lost data, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008, or other law that cannot be excluded.

10. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa. Please contact us first so we can try to resolve any problem; if we cannot, the courts of Johannesburg have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer elsewhere, you also keep the protections of the law where you live.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The effective date above will change, and for material changes we will email Premium subscribers at least 14 days in advance.
